Comment remiser son quai ou ponton modulaire pour l’hiver

How to store your modular dock or pontoon for the winter

Quebec winters are harsh: ice, snow, strong winds… A poorly prepared dock or pontoon can be damaged. Fortunately, with a modular dock, storage is quick and easy . Here are our tips for properly protecting your installation.

1. Clean before disassembling

Before thinking about storage, take the time to:

  • Rinse the structure with clean water to remove any residue, algae or sand.
  • Check the condition of the wood and the fixings.
  • Remove the accessories (chairs, ladder, cup holders) and store them separately.

2. Disassemble into modules

This is the main advantage of the modular system: rather than moving an entire dock, you can separate it into 4x4 or 4x8 sections . Each module is lightweight and easy to handle, simplifying transport and storage.

3. Storage Options

There are two ways to store your dock or pontoon:

  • Outside : you can leave your modules stacked on the ground, ideally raised (with pallets, for example) to avoid direct contact with snow and moisture.
  • Indoors : if you have a garage, shed or warehouse space, your modules will stay dry, which further extends their lifespan.

4. Leaving it in water: is that possible?

Unlike some metal or synthetic structures that are fragile and susceptible to frost damage, wood can withstand winter . Many users leave their docks on the water. However, we recommend checking the water conditions (ice movement, currents, etc.). In some cases, removing the modules is the safer option.

5. Prepare the wood for winter

  • Apply oil or protection before the cold season.
  • Wait a few weeks after the initial installation before applying a dye.
  • Check every spring if a small touch-up is needed: this is the key to wood lasting year after year.

In summary

With a modular dock or pontoon:

  • Easy disassembly
  • simple storage
  • wood resistant to northern climates,
  • Guaranteed durability season after season.

Your dock will be ready to resume service as soon as the good weather returns!
